Summer Mission Trip

West Virginia

July 23-30, 2011

2010 West Virginia Missionaries Return with Grateful Hearts!

On Sunday, July 18th, First Presbyterian Church commissioned 19 volunteers to be Christ’s hands and feet in the world.  In our prayer together, these missionaries promised to be dedicated disciples by teaching Jesus’ message, providing others in need with food and a safe place to live, and specifically by traveling to Montgomery, WV for a week of service.  Once again we partnered with the Presbytery of West Virginia through a program called the West Virginia Ministry of Advocacy and Workcamps (WVMAW).  Tim and Joan Stewart are the directors.  Joan is the Pastor of Montgomery Presbyterian Church and Tim is the on site coordinator.  Aside from the site in Montgomery, WVMAW supports 5 other sites across southern West Virginia with access to the parts of the state devastated each Spring by flash flooding.

This year our volunteers began the week with an ecumenical worship service with other mission groups from New Hampshire (one Episcopalian one Catholic) as well as the local Episcopalian and Presbyterian Churches.  We centered our hearts and minds on worship and prayer to prepare for a hard week of work.

Bright and early on Monday, the group traveled to Belle, WV to the home of Chuck and Sherry Casto.  Throughout the week, our volunteers helped to remove rotting wood from the eves, put up new fascia board, install gutters, remove and replace 7 rotted windows, fix some roofing shingles, repair ceilings with water damage and a LOT of painting!  One afternoon, while our work was stalled by a downpour, we sat on the Casto’s porch and watched as their dog had to vacate his dog house (cinder blocks with a street sign as a roof) because even his house was flooding!  With Pierre and Roland’s leadership, even the dog had a new house by the end of the week!

Aside from the hard work, we met each day for a time of worship that was led by members of our group and gathered for family style meals provided by our chefs Ralph and Adele.  We also participated in a breakfast for the homeless serving over 150 people!  A trip to the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine and the New River helped us understand more about the culture of West Virginia.

Jesus tells his disciples in Acts 1:8 that we are to be His witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.  This means in our own town (Jerusalem), in our country (Judea), in other countries (Samaria), and to the whole world!  How is First Presbyterian living into Christ’s words?  One way is by sending missionaries to West Virginia.  In the next year, let’s take Christ’s words more seriously as we seek to be His witnesses locally, nationally, and globally!

We would like to invite the entire congregation to join us on the first Wednesday Night of the year to hear more about our trip and watch our video.  We’ll be sharing some of our experiences and reflections.  We hope you can join us!

2009 WEST VIRGINIA MISSION TRIP RETURNS HOME!

On June 28th this congregation commissioned 15 Mission Volunteers to go to West Virginia for a week of work, prayer, and sharing.  I am happy to report that we all returned home safely on July 11th after an incredible experience in the hills of Appalachia.  Working with the West Virginia Mission and Advocacy Workcamps, a ministry sponsored by the Presbytery of West Virginia, we were privileged to participate in a variety of service activities.  Mr. James Plumbly’s home was in ill repair due to a leaking room and substantial water damage.  Our crew, with the help of our site coordinator Tim Stewart, removed several layers of shingles, surred up the roof where rotting wood had given way, and put on a brand new roof.  In the home, we focused on two rooms where ceilings were damaged taking out the wet sheet rock, reinsulating, and finishing the rooms even down to crown molding.  At Montgomery Presbyterian Church, many of us participated with a ministry that served breakfast and provided an opportunity for folks to gather as social outreach in the community.  Aside from working, we visited the West Virginia State Museum learning the history and culture of the state, watched a video at the Clay Museum on the effects of flooding, and the highlight for most was a rafting trip in the New River Gorge.
For me, the best parts of the trip were the relationships we experienced.  Mr. Plubmly visited and worked with us each day.  His daughters, Shirley and Debbie were there too!  We worshipped and visited with members of Montgomery and Falls View Presbyterian Churches.  We enjoyed working with two Summer Interns, Lucy and Greg, at our sites, and sharing meals and moments with each other.
We are excited to share our stories with the congregation during a Wednesday Night Program in the Fall.  We will have a picture slide show and hope you will come out to hear what our Mission Volunteers were able to share in the name of Christ.
Thank you to the entire congregation for supporting us in this effort and encouraging us to live into our call to serve one another.

Peace,
Ashley

Below is a letter from WVMAW Intern Greg Steible:

Beaufortonians,
Thank ya’ll for coming out here to work!  Tim was excited about you for weeks telling me since the first day I met him how wonderful ya’ll are.  He was dead on!  Ya’ll have a youthful, exciting spirit with the knowledge and stories of age.  Ya’ll have been an absolute gift and blessing.  The food I was able to share with ya’ll was fantastic!  Thank you for including me in that.  Also I appreciated being included on Sunday and Wednesday.  It’s been a real treat!  You are some of the most open individuals I have met.  It never ceases to amaze me how many of ya’ll simply go off and introduce yourselves to complete strangers and make them feel ya’ll have known them forever.  I know this is how they feel because I have been in this situation.  From baseball to rafting, vespers to meals I have loved the time I have spent getting to know ya’ll.  I now know why Tim was so excited!  Not only are ya’ll fun but hard working (when not asleep on the roof!)  Thanks for everything.  God Bless.
